Be advised, however, that all of the credit bureaus have tightened access to this information and will no longer accept residential based businesses (for us this means families) as users. Because of this added level of credit bureau security they are unable to offer nanny credit background checks.
The economic downturn of 2008 – 2010– and the resulting damage to credit reports and scores due to unemployment and foreclosures — have caused at least twelve states and many metropolitan areas to prohibit employers from pulling credit reports or limiting how employers may use them to make hiring or other job decisions. As of June 1, 2018, the following states and cities currently limit employers’ use of credit information in employment: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Chicago, Illinois, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New York City, New York, Oregon, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Washington State. The U. S., 2019 House Committee on Financial Services on July 11 passed legislation, H.R.3614 – Restricting Credit Checks for Employment Decisions Act, that would prohibit employers nationwide from using credit reports for employment decisions, except when required by law or for a national security clearance.
Our recommendation would be if a nanny credit background check is important to your job staffing (a personal assistant who will have access to your bank funds for example or a senior caregiver who helps with bill payment) you may request that the applicant pull a credit report directly for themselves.
